Under hösten har det inom kölbåtssfären i Sverige växt fram ett nytt begrepp. Supertrimmet. Myntat av Arne K Larssen som vann SM i Express 2007 och även driver sajten regatta.nu. Som jag förstått det handlar det om att trimma fockskotpunkten i sidled istället för längsled i vissa lägen. Fördelen med detta är att man ändrar anfallsvinkeln på focken istället för att twista den. Detta är enligt Arne ett bättre angreppsätt i hårdvind samt när man behöver växla mellan fart och höjd i knepig sjö. Sidledsförflyttningen av focken behöver givetvis synkas med storseglet. Fördelen med detta är bland annat att man behåller formen på focken och inte tappar kraft genom att twista den onödigt mycket. En av tankarna med mycket twist i svår sjö är ju att oberoende av hur kursen ringlar i vågorna är det alltid någon del av seglet som genererar kraft framåt. Det känns ju rimligt, men med supertrimmet kan man istället anpassa anfallsvinkeln utan att tappa kraft i den del av seglet som är för mycket eller för lite twistad.
När jag tänker efter så finns det egentligen goda argument för såväl mycket twist som förflyttning av skotpunkten i sidled i svår sjö. Mycket twist borde ju vara bra för att ha ett jämnt drag i seglet genom en våg. Den kursförändring som uppstår genom en våg kan man ju knappast hinna parera genom att flytta fock- och storskotpunkt i sidled. Dessutom i synk med varandra. I ett längre perspektiv, över flera vågor, där man behöver mycket kraft i särskilt svåra vågor medan man vill ta extra höjd när vågorna är lugnare borde dock Supertrimmet vara klart bättre än twist.
Arne bevisade onekligen styrkan i Supertrimmet när han på SM i Nynäshan seglade ifrån allt motstånd. Framförallt i förhållanden när sjön var grövre än vinden och dessutom låg med en mindre anfallsvinkel än vinden. Då växlade Arne fart och höjd med supertrimmet medan övriga flottan till största del använde sig av twisten för att hantera den svåra sjön.
Supertrimmet har skapat en stor debatt inom kölbåtssfären i Sverige. Kritiken, framförallt från jolle- och katamaranseglare, har varit att detta inte är någon nyhet. De har nog rätt. Nyheten består snarare i att väldigt få Expresser har en sidgående vagn till fockskotpunkten trots att detta är tillåtet enligt klassregeln. Dessutom rekommenderar North Sails trimguide för Expresser att man twistar för att hantera knepig sjö snarare än att använda sig av en tvärgående skotskena. Arne har hittat ett nytt, eller kanske snarare bortglömt, sätt att justera focktrimmet på Expressen.
