Igår gastade jag på en Mermaid i Skerries, några mil norr om Dublin. Mermaid är en irländsk entypsbåt för två till tre personer. Båten är cirka fem meter lång och har partialrigg och spinnaker samt en uppfällbar köl på knappa 100 kilo. Mermaid ritades på 30-talet och samtliga exemplar verkar byggda i trä. Irländska mästerskapen lockar fortfarande ett trettiotal båtar. På bilden till höger syns en av våra konkurrenter i vårt kölvatten på andra länsen.
Skerries Sailing Club arrangerade och la en spikrak olympiabana. Vi kom 2:a respektive 3:a av sju startande Mermaids i de två seglingarna. Tankarna dras helt klart till Scampi även om den bara är 23-fot och aningen modernare i sin design. På sjuttiotalet seglade de visst mini-transat med dessa båtar.
