Jag är nöjd med vår insats på Gotland Runt 2008. Vi var en meriterad besättning med stor erfarenhet av såväl ban- som havskappsegling. Men båten var helt ny för oss och några av oss hade aldrig seglat den innan start. Båten är fantastisk att segla, grejerna höll och vi tog oss runt på ett framgångsrikt sätt.
Resultatmässigt kom vi 4:a av 7 startande båtar i IRC D. Omräknat till LYS D hade det räckt till en 23:e plats av 87 startande båtar. Vi seglade drygt 1.5 timme långsammare än en Dehler 33 Cruising i LYS klassen och drygt 2.5 timmar långsammare än en First 34.7 i vår egen klass. Nedan beskriver jag vårt varv runt Gotland och analyserar vad vi kan förbättra till nästa gång.
Starten
Vi startade nära startfartyget i lovart med bra fart för styrbords halsar i hyfsat fri vind.
Sträck till Almagrundet
Tack vare mycket bra väderinformation höll vi oss kvar på styrbords halsar och vinden vred något höger vilket gjorde att vi precis sträckte upp till Almagrundet utan att behöva slå.
Sträck till Gotska Sandön
Vinden tilltar till cirka 10 knop skenbar vind. Vi skiftar från den lätta Genua 2 till den tunga tvåan. Vi har mycket bra fart i båten och håller en X-332 stabilt bakom oss. Vinden ökar ytterligare och vid 22 knops skenbar vind bestämmer vi oss för att skifta segel ännu en gång till Genua 3. Loggen visar samma fart men det är uppenbart att vi tappar mot X-332:an. Båten får sämre driv i den bitvis stampiga sjön. Båten är bekvämare att seglare men gör inte samma fart mot mål.
Kryss till Fårö
Vinden vrider emot och minskar en aning i styrka. Vi byter tillbaka till den tunga tvåan och slår fint med skiften upp mot Fårö. Vi går relativt nära Salvorev och övriga land för att positionera oss för ett högervrid.
Kryss till Östergarn
Någon timme efter Fårö fyr ökar vinden igen. Det blåser upp mot 26 knop skenbar vind och vi skiftar till Genua 3 igen. Skiftet tar onödigt lång tid då vi inte tränat innan och vi förlorar mycket fart med för många man på fördäck. Vi kryssar söderut relativt nära land och bestämmer oss för att runda Östergarn strax öster om Östergarnsholm. Efteråt noterar vi att de flesta i vår klass seglade väster om holmen. Enligt Carl Frykfeldt på Tjajka gynnades båtarna som gick på insidan av ett högervrid nära land. Landeffekten borde dock i teorin snarare generera ett vänstervrid på grund av högre friktion. Men men, å andra sidan tipsar veteranen Odd Lindqvist om högervrid i sydvästliga vindar nära land kring Östergarn. Han motiverar det med att “vinden vill lämna kustlinjen med så nära 90 grader som möjligt”.
Kryss till Hoburgen
Vi kryssar vidare mot Hoburgen nära Gotland i vindar runt 10 m/s med byar upp mot 12. Med 15 distans kvar till Hoburgen minskar vinden betydligt och vi byter tillbaks till den tunga tvåan. Återigen tar skiftet alldeles för lång tid. Vi är inte synkade mellan mast och fördäck och drar upp en liten reva i seglet. Det tar tid att hitta rätt tejp och skiftet tar nog uppemot en halvtimme. Sista 7-8 distansen ner till Hoburgen ligger vi och slår väldigt nära land. I efterhand noterade vi att det möjligen var svagare vind invid land i denna passage.
Halvvind till Visby
I den västliga vinden går det snabbt mot Visby. Vi kör tunga tvåan, går mellan Lilla och Stora Karlsö och toppar 12.8 knop.
Halvvind och kryss till Alma
Efter Visby lovar vi 20 grader och fortsätter i bra fart med tunga tvåan. Vi håller oss hårt på rhumbline på 19 grader. Efter några timmar vrider vinden vänster och vi hissar spinnakern. Vi väntar oss ett vindskifte till nordost vilket mycket riktigt kommer cirka 25 distans innan Alma. Vi är beredda och tajmar skiftet bra. Vi sträcker upp till Alma hela vägen förutom de sista fem distansen. Vi är superskärpta i den lätta kryssen sista vägen till Alma. Vi växlar om till bankappsegling, slår på skiften och distansierar oss rejält från bland annat en X-99:a.
Halvvind i mål
Vinden står sig lyckligtvis ända in i mål och vi ser X-99:an vi tidigare passerat sätta spinnaker bakom oss. Det visar sig vara fel beslut och vi drygar ut avståndet ytterligare. 21:42 på tisdagskvällen skär vi mållinjen vid Skanskobb.
Analys
Eftersom delägaren Måns Håkansson är doktor i Meteorologi hade vi mycket bra väderkompetens ombord. Måns har dessutom varit med och utvecklat SailPlanner som vi använde flitigt. Prognoserna stämde förbluffande bra, det instabila vädret till trots. Jag tycker vi fattade rätt beslut utifrån vädret och det är knappast här jag ser den största förbättringspotentialen. Dessutom fungerade kommunikationen ombord mycket bra och samtliga i besättningen var involverade i såväl strategi som väderläge. Överföringen av information mellan vakterna fungerade fint. Måhända har vi ett väl strukturerat vaktschema att tacka för detta(se bild till höger).
När jag jämför rundningstider med några utvalda konkurrenter(se bild nedan) drar jag slutsatsen att vi tappade mest ner till Östergarn. Nedan listas förbättringsåtgärder som vi tar med oss till nästa Gotland Runt.
- Raila mer => Det ger enormt utslag på loggen. Bättre disciplin i vaktbyten och än mer strukturerad stuvning ombord möjliggör detta. Kanske kan också den sovande vakten få större delar av sin sömn på railen.
- Effektivare segelbyten => Här behöver vi träna. Det finns mycket att tjäna.
- Vi behöver kraft i sjön => Jag tror vi kan köra den tunga tvåan i upp till 25 knop skenbar vind istället för 20-21. I alla fall när det är sjö behöver vi drivet och accelarationen i vågorna. Båten blir jobbig att vara ombord på men den går som ett skott. Möjligen är dessutom glappet till Genua 3 aningen stort. Enligt rundningstiderna ovan gick Tjajka väldigt bra till Fårö. Efter att ha pratat med dem vet jag att de “höll ut” med Genua 1.
- Kanske skulle vi gått innanför Östergarn => I alla fall med tanke på att de andra i klassen gjorde det samt Carl Frykfeldts observation ovan.
- Kanske skulle vi gått längre ifrån land vid Hoburgen då det möjligen blåste mer där. En annan teori är att vi låg och slog mitt i strömfåran. Enligt Odd Lindqvist är det motström runt Hoburgen och man bör gå antingen nära land eller längre ut till havs. Lindqvist vittnar själv om båtar som kämpat ut i strömfåran för styrbord när de varit långt inne vid land. Måhända var det detta vi råkade ut för i ett antal slag.
Sammanfattning
Sammanfattningsvis tycker jag att vi gjorde ett mycket bra Gotland Runt, med en klockren besättning på en fantastik båt! Vi är inte långt ifrån toppbåtarna och med lite mer tid till träning och förberedelse kommer vi bli riktigt riktigt grymma!
