För knappa två veckor sedan bloggade jag om Bankappsegling på Irländska sjön. Under min vecka i Skerries på Irland fick jag även chansen att segla med de softa havsrävarna Gregory och Frank. Tillsammans äger de en Folkboat 26 och jag fick vara med på den sedvanliga onsdagseglingen i Skerries Sailing Club.
När jag mötte upp Gregory utanför klubben ursäktade han sig lite och sa att de inte var så mycket för det där med tävlande. “We’re just out there to fuck up the starting procedure”. 
Och mycket riktigt blev upplevelsen en helt annan än söndagens entypssegling i Mermaid.
Båten var tärd av salt och hård sjögång. Seglen var urgamla men riggen var sprillans ny från Nordic Mast och såg riktigt het ut. Harkenblock och svarta ultratampar till häckstaget skar sig en aning mot båtens standard i övrigt. Vi körde ett banrace i handikappsystemet Echo. Gregory lät mig ta pinn medan Frank höll sig i den dieseldoftande ruffen hela racet. Han låg mest och sov med en öl vilande bekvämt på magen. Placeringen hade förstås ingen betydelse men Gregory kommenterade glatt konkurrenterna. “That’s Jo over there, he takes his sailing very seriously”.
Så det var så klart inte tävlingen i sig som gjorde intryck. Det gjorde däremot den Irländska seglingskulturen. Frank och Gregory verkade först inte särskilt erfarna. Men de är ändå ena riktiga sjöbusar. Seglingsklimatet på Irland är ett helt annat. På helgerna brukar de cruisa 70 distans till Isle of Man. Enligt dem själva hade de loggat 21 knop i en supervåg med den lilla 26-fots träsegelbåten. Och vädret lever verkligen om. Jag blir förvånad över hur snabbt det slår om. Klart Gregory och Frank har koll. Iklädda fruktansvärt nersmutsade Musto HPX-ställ. Höjdskillnaden på tidvattnet är över sju meter och för att komma ut till båten som ligger på svaj måste man klättra ner för en repstege på kajen. Stegen är full med hav, dvs tång, sjögräs, dy och maneter. 
Man får skjuts till båten av en gummibåt som man anropar på VHF. Enligt Gregory är hamnen klassad som näst värst på Irland av försäkringsbolagen. Vågorna från Irländska sjön rullar rakt in och bojanordningarna är gigantiska för att klara sjöhävningen. Trots detta förlorar de oftast en båt per år som sliter sig och slås sönder mot klipporna.
Nåt annat jag slogs av är Irländarnas förmåga att anordna trevliga, enkla men ända proffsiga kappseglingar. Eftersom 
cruisingmöjligheterna är begränsade är alla i klubben med och kappseglar. Oavsett båt och förmåga. Start klockan 19 och ett race seglas. Efteråt bjuds det naturligtvis på Guinness och hamburgare i klubbhuset som så klart även har en pub. På puben sköts även protestförhandlingarna. Skulle vi inte kunna inspireras lite mer av denna mentalitet i Sverige?
