På söndagsmorgonen var det återigen fullt på bryggorna. Tårarna sprutade kring de flesta båtar när familj och vänner gav sina sista lyckönskningar. Väl ute på havet får båtarna inte ha någon kontakt alls med omvärlden. Transporten ut på fritt vatten ackompanjerades av en speaker som presenterade seglarna, musik samt jubel från 1000-tals åskådare. Gåshud!
Starten går klockan 14:17. Vid halv ett gick jag ombord på en stor åskådarbåt för att åka ut till startområdet. Kapten körde väldigt nära båtarna och vinkade glatt till alla seglarna. Det kändes som att han kände minst hälften av dem. Vid ett tillfälle fick han tvärt slå på backen. Då kom nämligen en Mini surfande i tio knop med skepparen nere i ruffen. Autopiloten gjorde sitt och de 200 pers som var ombord på åskådarbåten väntade spänt på när skepparen skulle dyka upp ur ruffen. När han väl dök upp blev han välkomnad med ett jättejubel. Och vinkade coolt tillbaka.
Vinden var stabil från nordost. 10 sekundmeter med upp till 13 i byarna. Och sol, helt perfekta förhållnaden! Startfartyget sköt inga skott utan allt sköttes över VHF:en. Nedräkning vid 8, 4, 1 och 0. Linjen var lång och fältet spridde ut sig. Banan inleddes med en kort kryss upp mot land innan båtarna föll av, satte spinnaker och dånade bort i den soldisande horisonten. Tyvärr var det många båtar som tog fel på första kryssmärket varför det 85 båtar stora fältet blev utspritt ganska tidigt. Vid kryssrundningen väntade jag spänt på att de första assymetriska spinnakrarna skulle ploppa upp. Först tyckte jag det tog lite tid. Men då såg jag att skepparna stod i sittbrunn och vinkade, sådär solofranskt med båda armarna. Till publiken. Nån minut senare tog de lugnt och sansat och hissade nylonet. De ska ju segla i en månad så lite publikfrieri bjuder de gärna på. Sen blev det åka av och en fin show.
Åskådarbåten följde med seglarna fem distansminuter ut till havs. Vi vände precis akter om ledarbåten och styrde tillbaka in mot La Rochelle medan båtarna försvann ut till den soliga horisonten. Deras framfart går föredömligt lätt att följa här.
Nicolas Boidevezi på 719 rundar kryssmärket först av alla.
Årets bild? Samma 719 i ledning med sikte på Portugals nordvästra hörn. Precis till höger i bild ligger tvåan så han är inte så ensam som han ser ut.
