På nyårsafton startar Barcelona World Race. 15 IMOCA 60 på startlinjen. Två man på varje båt. Jorden runt. Från Barcelona till Barcelona. Via Godahoppsudden och Kap horn. Non stop.

Virbac-Pabrec 3 – Loïck Peyron & Jean Pierre Dick
Titelförsvarande Jean-Pierre Dick seglar tillsammans med seglarlegenden Loïck Peyron i en nybyggd båt som de dessutom hunnit segla hem från Nya Zeeland. Peyron har kappseglat över Atlanten 42 gånger varav 18 solo. Han började med Mini Transat 79 och sedan dess har det blivit många segrar. Tillsammans med just Jean-Pierre Dick i en IMOCA 60 vann han t ex Transat Jacques Vabre 2005.

Foncia – Michel Desjoyeaux & Francois Gabart
Michel “Le Professeur” Desjoyeaux hamnade ju på fel sida om “The Azores High” i senaste Route du Rhum och fick inte riktigt visa vad hans nya innovativa Foncia gick för. Nu seglar han tillsammans med en ung lovande fransman. Desjoyeaux själv är ju en av de absolut största med bland annat två segrar i Vendée Globe 2000/01 och 2008/09. Han vann även det längsta av de två benen i Mini Transat 1991.

Président – Jean Le Cam & Bruno Garcia
En fransk-spansk duo där Jean Le Cam är den mest erfarne. Le Cam är en av tre som har tre segrar i La Solitaire du Figaro och kom två i Vendée Globe 2004/05. I senaste Vendée Globe blev han räddad av Vincent Riou utanför Cap horn efter att hans båt tappat bulben och kappsejsat. Garcia är läkare till vardags och har tagit tjänstledigt sex månader. Han är en av två amatörer i tävlingen. Garcia har tidigare seglat Solitaire du Figaro tre gånger, det var då han kom i kontakt med Le Cam. Garcia kom även femma i Mini Transat 2003. Le Cam och Garcia seglar Mike Golding’s tidigare Ecover 3, byggd 2007.

Hugo Boss – Alex Thomson & Andy Meiklejohn
Alex Thomson är engelsmannen som är känd för att driva sina båtar stenhårt. Han har dygnsrekorded i IMOCA 60 på 501 sjömil på ett dygn. En snittfart på 20,9 knop. Thomson kom tvåa i Barcelona World Race 2007/08 och är revanschsugen. Inte bara efter andraplatsen utan även efter att ha brutit Vendée Globe 2004(tekniska problem) och 2008(tappad köl, räddad av landsmannen Mike Golding) samt Velux 5 Oceans 2006(kollision med fiskebåt). Ombord finns också den mycket erfarne Nya Zeeländaren Andy Meiklejohn som bland annat seglade Volvo Ocean Race 2004/05. Båten är ritad av argentinaren Juan Kouyoumdjian och byggd i Nya Zeeland 2007. Tack vare en så kallad “grand father-clause” har den högre rigg och större segelyta än de nyare båtarna. Dock väger båten betydligt mer(10 ton) än nyare båtar som Foncia(7.8 ton) och Virbac-Paprec 3(7.5 ton). Thomson och Meiklejohn har redan seglat 12.000 sjömil tillsammans i båten och lär inte spara på krutet. Om de lyckas hålla ihop båten blir de nog farliga, båda i totalen och för ett nytt 24-timmarsrekord. Gustav Morin från hamnen.se hängde nyligen med på en provtur och fick en del riktigt fina filmsekvenser i HD.

Gaes Centros Auditivos– Dee Caffari & Anna Corbella
En erfaren spansk-brittisk tjejduo som blir första båt i Barcelona World Race med helt kvinnlig besättning. Dee Caffari kom sexa i Vendée Globe 2008/09 och Anna Corbella kom 15:e av 36 startande i Mini Transats protoklass 2009. Corbella har även en handfull förstaplatser i spanska mästerskapen i 420 och 470. Båten är ritat av Owen Clark och byggdes 2007 i Nya Zeeland.

We Are Water – Jaume Mumbrú & Cali Sanmarti
Mumbrú & Sanmarti seglar för miljöorganisationen We Are Water och har båda ett förflutet inom Classe Mini. Mumbrú är advokat till vardags och den andre amatören i tävlingen. Båten är ritat av Pierre Rolland, samme konstruktör som ritat Mini-båtarna Pogo 650 och D2, och sjösattes år 2000.

.- Mirabaud – Dominique Wavre & Michèle Paret
Schweizaren Dominique Wavre har kappseglat jorden runt sju gånger. Det är flest av alla i startfältet. Wavre seglade bland annat på svenska Intrum Justitia i Volvo Ocean Race 1993/94. Han seglar tillsammans med sin fru Michèle Paret som bland annat var med på Maiden under Whitbread Round the World Race 1989/90. Båten är en Owen Clarke Design från 2007 som hottades upp i La Rochelle i somras. Wavre och Paret seglade samma båt i Barcelona World Race 2007/08 och kom då trea.
