Den senaste veckan har jag seglat runt på The Solent i södra England tillsammans med en instruktör från RYA och fyra ytterligare kursdeltagare. RYA står för Royal Yacht Association och de har ett fantastiskt utbud med kurser, litteratur, seglarskolor och charter för att utbilda duktiga sjömän och kvinnor. Pedagogiken är fantastisk och deras certifieringar är välrenommerade i hela världen. Detta gör deras verksamhet till en stor industri med tusentals certifierade instruktörer världen över som arbetar heltid inom organisationen.
Kursen jag deltog i heter RYA Coastal Skipper och jag siktar på att certifiera mig som Yachtmaster Offshore till nästa vår. För att klara detta behöver jag plugga teori i vinter och sedan gå ytterligare en praktisk förberedelsekurs. Själva certifieringen går sedan ut på att jag är skeppare ombord på en båt och under tio timmar får uppgifter som bedöms av en examinator. Seglingen görs i The Solent och nattnavigering in i hamn utan gps är ett av de svårare momenten, tror jag. Det hela kompliceras av att tidvattenskillnaden är 4-5 meter och strömmarna upp till 2 knop. Att man dessutom inte bör använda gps eller andra tekniska hjälpmedel för exempelvis positionering, waypoints, tidvatten och strömmar ökar utmaningen. Under seglingen kommer examinatorn dessutom sitta och förhöra en om allt mellan dieselmotorer, fyrsektorer och säkerhetsutrustning för en långsegling. Coastal Skipperkursen jag har deltagit i denna vecka har gett mig en bättre förståelse för vad som krävs för att klara ‘uppkörningen’ för Yachtmaster Offshore. Jag känner mig helt trygg med att skeppa båten till havs och i farleder men behöver läsa på mer teori kring exempelvis ‘passage planning’, ‘pilotage’, ‘collision regulations’, fyrkaraktärer, strömmar och tidvatten. Det mesta är allmängiltigt men en del handlar även om hur RYA vill att man ska göra saker. Lite som att bilskolan vill att man håller ratten tio-i-två. Rent praktiskt behöver jag framförallt träna manövrering i hamn med inombordare och en lite tyngre deplacerande båt.
Mitt huvudsakliga mål med certifieringen till Yachtmaster Offshore är att bli en mer komplett seglare med ett internationellt certifikat som öppnar helt nya dörrar för framtida äventyr.
Tuff inledning med planering och exekvering av nattnavigering in i Portsmouth. Lite Bambi-feeling med annat språk, ny båt, nya vatten och okänd besättning. Men vi kom i hamn säkert tillslut!
