När Sex Pistols och punkrocken var som störst i mitten av 70-talet dansades The Pogo Dance. I Pogo Structures fall anspelar namnet på hur man tumlas runt i en Mini 6,50 under Mini Transat – ensam i en liten båt nånstans ute på Atlanten. Structures blev känt i och med sin klassiska Mini Pogo 6,50 som ritades av Pierre Rolland och byggdes i 140 exemplar.
Första gången jag träffade en Pogo var inför starten av Mini Transat 2009 i La Rochelle och det var just en Pogo 6,50 som jag köpte senare samma år. Jag hade letat efter en båt som var snabb, optimerad för shorthandedsegling och bullet-proof till havs. Utifrån min budget hade jag inte kunnat köpa en bättre båt.
Några år senare, i mars 2015, åker jag och Niclas Domack ner till Bretagne för att besöka varvet. Syftet var främst att titta på den senaste cruisingmodellen Pogo 30 men även att få en ordentlig rundvisning på varvet. Vi fick kontakt med Chantal Marzin, försäljningsansvarig, som utlovade provsegling samt en guidad tur igenom produktionsprocessen.
Båtarna

Pogo Structures delar upp sina båtmodeller i cruising respektive racing. I racingsegmentet håller man sig till de två boxreglerna Class Mini respektive Class 40. Boxregeln innebär att båtarna måste hålla sig till vissa definierade mått som till exempel längd, bredd, djup och masthöjd. Det går alltså ut på att bygga en så snabb båt som möjligt inom boxen istället för att optimera båten att mäta så bra som möjligt inom en specifik mätregel som exempelvis ORCi. Structures producerar idag generation tre av sina båtar inom boxregeln – Pogo 3 respektive Pogo 40S3.

Inom cruisingsegmentet producerar Structures idag Pogo 30, Pogo 12,50 samt Pogo 50. En Pogo 36 är på gång med första leverans under hösten 2016. Bland tidigare produktioner finns 10,50 samt Pogo 8,50 som framförallt var optimerad för Transquadra, en amatörsegling solo eller doublehanded över Atlanten. Samtliga cruisingmodeller förutom 8,50 har en fällköl vars konstruktion är patenterad och egentligen den enda del i produktionskedjan som hålls hemlig under vår guidning på varvet.
Ledorden för en Pogo är att den ska vara kul, lätt och funktionell samt stryktålig till havs. Samtliga Pogos är osänkbara.
Varvet
Pogo Structures ligger i sydvästra Bretagne, i den lilla staden Combrit, och grundades 1987. 1995 började man producera sin första seriebåt, Pogo 6,50. Varvet inger en känsla av familjeföretag och trots att kunderna står på kö har man inga närstående planer på att utöka produktionen. Leveranstiden för en Pogo 30 är 12-18 månaderna och man bygger cirka 50 Pogos per år. Ägaren vill behålla den familjära stämningen och prioriterar kvalitet före kvantitet. Structures anlitar inga tredjepartsleverantörer utan hela produktionen, förutom riggen, görs på plats.
Produktionsprocessen
Vid vårt besök på varvet bjöds vi på en tre timmar lång guidning. Det var inget säljsnack utan vi gick direkt in i “fabriken”.
När rätt antal glasfibermattor rullats ut i honformen passas allt distansmaterial in. Olika typer av distansmaterial, i huvudsak Airex, används. För till exempel inredning används lättare distans medan en starkare variant används kring infästningar och högt belastade ytor.
I distansmaterialet är det små genomgående hål som gör att vinylestern sammanfogar glasfibern på respektive sida om distansmaterialet. I den runda biten ska det fästas en winsch.
I racingbåtarna Pogo 3 och Pogo 40S3 används ett tunnare distansmaterial.
Det tunnare distansmaterialet ser mer ut som en bikupa där vinylestern binder glasfibern på respektive sida om distansmaterialet emellan cellerna i stället för genom genomgående hål.
En Pogo föds när vinylestern vakuuminjiceras i glasfibern och distansmaterialet. På bilden är det Pogo 30 som kommer till liv. Vi hade tur som var på plats i just denna timme då endast en Pogo 30 injiceras var 14:e dag. Ägaren till just denna båt missade tyvärr detta tillfälle men var glad för våra bilder. Vinylestern förs ut i skrovet via de blå kanalerna och det syns tydligt i brunt hur vinylestern sprider sig från botten upp ut till friborden.
Vinylestern blandas löpande med en visp och tack vare injiceringen är man säker på att varje båt får exakt lika mycket. Det ger en mycket god möjlighet att träffa målvikten exakt vilket är särskilt viktigt för racingbåtarna. En Class 40 får minimum väga 4500 kg och en Pogo 40S3 väger ofta mellan 4500 och 4510 när den fått ligga i vattnet i några veckor och en liten del vatten trängt in i de yttersta lagren.
En Pogo ligger kvar i honformen tills samtliga skott, bottenstockar och stringers monterats. Detta för att båten ska vara styv, och inte riskera att slå sig, när hon plockas ur formen. Metoden sänker naturligtvis produktionstakten eftersom varje form används en längre tid men här prioriteras kvalitén.
Eftersom det sparas på trä ombord finnas det en hel del formar för luckor och skott med mera. Allting vakuuminjiceras.
Båten tar form. Här har man just plockat ur henne ur formen.
Här sammanfogas däck och skrov. Däcket är också i sandwich och injiceras i en egen form. Under vattenlinjen används genomskinlig gelcoat så att injiceringen kan inspekteras och kvalitetsäkras. Botten målas sedan med vinylester, primer och bottenfärg. Epoxi används om ägaren så önskar men är ingenting varvet anser nödvändigt.
De trädetaljer som finns ombord görs i ljust trä(vilket?, björk?) i en annan del av lokalen.
Riggen levereras från Z-spar i Frankrike eller Axxon i Rumänien.
Här Pogo 30 nummer 47, numera stationerad i Helsingfors.
Kölbladet består av homogen glasfiber och bulben av bly. Hur mekanismen för att fälla kölen ser ut är en hemlighet. Enligt varvet har man sett båtar gå på grund i upp till 12 knop helt utan skador.
Pogos Mini 650 generation 3, designad av Guillaume Verdier, är senaste designen inom Pogofamiljen. Förväntningarna är att den ska vinna serieklassen i Mini Transat som startar nu i höst. Det är ett antal Pogo 3 med bland de 80 startande båtarna, bland annat Olivier Taillard som själv jobbar på varvet.
Pogo Structures första lokal där den smått legendariska Pogo 6,50 byggdes. Totalt blev 140 stycken byggda.
På andra våningen i en av lokalerna finns det lilla kontoret. Där finns en del sparsmakat säljmaterial samt modeller av samtliga båtar.
