Route du Rhum | På spaning i St Malo

I Frankrike är solohavskappsegling galet stort! Romrutten, eller Route du Rhum på franska, startade söndagen den 4 november. Hela Team Hoffstedt var på plats och vinkade av de 123 seglarna i lika många båtar. Vi spenderade givetvis mest tid omkring Mikael Ryking som är den förste svensk som någonsin deltar i en av världens mest utmanande havskappseglingar. 3.500 sjömil, solo, non stop från St Malo i Bretagne till Guadeloupe i Västindien.

St Malo fullständigt kokade av segling! 2 miljoner besökare i Race village under 10 dagar ger Frankrikes tredje största idrottsevenemang. Varenda travbana och fotbollsplan i hela St Malo var utlånad till bilburna besökare. Redan många mil före St Malo började det skyltas på motorvägen. Sedan flöt det förvånansvärt väl för att vara en så stor folkmassa. Välskyltat, parkering till alla och bussar in till Race village var 60:e sekund. Imponerande!

Så fort vi kom in till Race Village på fredagen mötte vi upp med Micke och de svenskar som på frivillig basis var där och hjälpte till. Just då var stämningen dämpad i svensklägret och Micke såg pressad ut. Detta var knappt 2 dygn före starten som skulle gå 14:00 på söndagen. Motorn var trasig, det nya storseglet satt fast i tullen i Rennes och båda vindmätarna som är helt nödvändiga för autopiloten var trasiga. Ombord på båten rådde kaos med verktyg och packning överallt. Men eftersom jag känner Micke vet jag att det döljer sig en ganska bra ordning bakom ytan. Hursomhelst, nu var det bråttom! 44 timmar kvar till start. 30 timmar kvar tills det var dags att slussa ut ur hamnen och lägga sig på svaj på en boj utanför slussen. Tidvattenskillnaden i St Malo är över 10 meter.

Med stor skicklighet och lite tur löste sig allt det nödvändiga de närmsta 44 timmarna. Motorreparatören fick ordning på motorn. Tre italienare blev klara med alla andra uppdrag och kunde i sista sekund sitta tre timmar i Talantas mast för att byta båda vindgivarnas kablar i masten. Storseglet dök upp 12 timmar före utslussning. Ett antal svenskar och Mikaels flickvän Irina arbetade stenhårt! På med alla dekaler, kapa till lattor, sätt på travare, passa in och testa. Et voilà, seglet satt som en smäck och Micke och Irina kunde slussa ut till bojen 03:45 på söndagsmorgonen. Väl ute vid bojen fick de ingen sömn utan arbetade in i det sista hela natten och Mikael lär ha varit helt utmattad inför starten. Svenskarna som hjälpte till på plats var framförallt Henrik Hydén, Pernilla Uhlin, Peter Mannerstråle, Fredrik Arnryd, Agneta Arnryd, Ludvig och Linus Ryking.

Vi själva bodde i Dinard precis över bukten från St Malo. När vi vaknade på söndagsmorgonen tittade vi spänt på Marine Traffic. Talantas position var utanför Slussen, yes, de är på gång. Efter frukost kom vi ut på en hög klippa på en halvö varifrån vi såg Talanta ligga vid bojen. Det var en mäktig känsla att se henne släppa förtöjningstamparna och stäva ut mot starten till havs. Vi hade en bra kikare och såg när Irina plockades upp av en följebåt och Micke gick till verket och hissade den nya storen. Ett storsegel på en Class 40 tar sin tid och kraft att få upp ensam men sakta sakta såg vi hur det hissades decimeter för decimeter. Kommer det att passa? Förbi första paret spridare, förbi andra, förbi backstagsinfästningen och sakta men säkert ända upp i topp. Från klippan med kikare såg det bra ut! Talanta föll av och slörade ut mot starten. Som en av initiativtagarna till den crowdfunding som gjordes för att finansiera storseglet kändes det väldigt skönt att se storen hissad!

Hur skulle vi nu följa resten av starten? Vår första tanke var att följa den via storbildsskärmarna inne i Race Village men vi visste att de skulle runda en klippa, Cap Fréhel, 16 sjömil och en timmes bilfärd västerut. Vi gav oss iväg. Det var precis lika välarrangerat som i Race Village. Här hade bönderna upplåtit sina åkrar till bilparkering och bussar gick löpande från parkeringen ut mot den legendariska klippan. Det var horder av folk men ute i naturen finns det ju gott om plats. Vi gick så långt ut vi kunde och satte oss på slänten ner mot de stupande klipporna.

Ultimetrimaranerna rundade märket utanför klippan 40 minuter efter startskottet. Macif var först, tätt följd av Edmond de Rothschild och Banque Populaire. Folkmassan jublade och trimaranerna rusade vidare västerut i 30 knop. Strax därefter rundade Imoca 60-båtarna med PRB och Vincent Riou i täten. Efter knappt 2 timmar rundade de 53 båtar som seglar i Class 40. Vi fick ett foto av Micke och Talanta genom kikaren precis efter att de hissat spinnakern. De seglade vidare mot tre kraftiga stormfronter på Biscaya för att därefter styra ner mot de varma passadvindarna. I skrivande stund har Micke tagit sig igenom höststormarna och just hissat le grand spi, satt på reggaen och börjat nöta sjömil, under planing, mot Västindien. Det måste vara en fantastisk känsla att vara nere i värmen och njuta av stjärnklara nätter efter den första veckans hårda prövning. Många båtar har brutit men Micke ligger på en stadig 22:a plats av 53 båtar. Vi önskar honom en riktigt härlig Pogodans till Guadeloupe!

Den senaste Imocan Charal med senaste designen på foils. Skulle hon kunna hota Alex Thomson i Hugo Boss? Svaret blir nog nej då hon fick roderproblem under första stormen i Biscaya.

Nio av de 53 Class 40-båtarna på rad i den lite kyliga kvällningen.

Namn på alla crowdfundare laminerat ombord.

Man fick räkna med långa ställtider mellan bryggorna.

Hela Team Hoffstedt var grymt taggat på att spana in Race Village och de 123 båtarna.
